With Grandparents Day just around the corner, UnitedHealthcare is highlighting resources that can help grandparents and caregivers continue to thrive, including a benefit many don't know they may already qualify for.
Marian Cabanillas with UnitedHealthcare says grandparents play a vital role in family life, but they also need support of their own.
"UnitedHealthcare celebrates grandparents and the role that they play in helping our families to thrive. Grandparents not just provide support, guidance and traditions that strengthen families. They also help connect generations," Cabanillas said.
People who have both Medicare and Medicaid could qualify for what is called a Dual Special Needs Plan, or D-SNP, at no additional cost. One common misconception is that enrolling means giving up existing coverage.
"Many people are surprised to learn that with a D-SNP, you get to keep both your Medicare and Medicaid coverage," Cabanillas said.
D-SNPs are designed to help coordinate Medicare and Medicaid benefits and make navigating the health care system easier. Eligible individuals often include people with limited income, those with disabilities, individuals with chronic health conditions, or people who need additional support.
Many D-SNPs may provide care coordination services, which can help enrollees find providers, keep track of doctor's appointments, and stay current on covered preventive care such as annual wellness visits and certain screenings. Plans can also connect enrollees with support services for housing, caregiver support, and other community resources.
Despite the range of benefits available, Cabanillas said nearly half of people who qualify for a D-SNP are not enrolled.
"Often it's because they just don't even realize that these plans exist or they don't understand the benefits that are available to them," Cabanillas said.
Depending on the plan and eligibility, additional benefits may include help with groceries or utilities, over-the-counter products, dental, vision and hearing benefits, and transportation assistance.
"It is important that folks check what plans are available in their area, because plans do vary from plan to plan, the benefits can be a little bit different," Cabanillas said.
