The Bahamas continues to be one of the most popular and diverse destinations in the Caribbean, offering travelers 16 unique island destinations with everything from world-class beaches and turquoise waters to cultural experiences and eco-adventures.

Travel journalist Terry Ward, speaking from Atlantis on Paradise Island, said the best island trips go beyond the beach.

"The best island trips go beyond the beach. I just love discovering the local traditions, trying the local food, and finding adventures that make a place really feel unique. And that's what makes the Bahamas stand out."

Ward said the variety across the islands is a major draw.

"There's 16 island destinations here. There's always something new to experience. You can get out on the water, get into nature and really learn about the culture, or just slow down, enjoy all the incredible scenery."

Ward recommends travelers venture beyond the major resort areas. She said Nassau is a strong starting point for experiencing Bahamian culture, history, local food, and beaches. On Grand Bahama Island, Freeport offers a different side of the Bahamas with nature, boating, and outdoor activities.

Ward said Eleuthera stands out for its pink sand beaches and dramatic coastline, while Harbour Island offers laid-back charm, restaurants, and waterfront views. For crystal-clear waters, she points to the Exumas.

"Every island just has its own personality and so much fun."

Ward said some of her most memorable experiences came from cultural stops in Nassau. She visited the Culture Museum with Arlene Nash and learned about Junkanoo, the Bahamas' most iconic cultural celebration. At Fort Charlotte, costumed character actors bring military history to life, Ward said she even fired a cannon for the first time. She also visited Tasty Teas, where she learned about the long tradition of bush medicine and local herbs used for generations in the Bahamas with Hilda.

"It's experiences like these that give you a deeper connection and a better understanding of what a place."

Ward said Atlantis on Paradise Island remains one of the most well-known resorts in the Caribbean for good reason, but noted there are many other lodging options across the islands, including boutique properties and local inns on the Out Islands that offer a quieter pace and a closer connection to Bahamian culture and hospitality.
