Experts stress that as natural disasters continue to affect communities across the country, taking a few simple steps to prepare is essential.
Cheryl Nelson, a FEMA-certified disaster preparedness instructor and meteorologist, says preparing for emergencies does not have to be complicated.
"As a FEMA-certified instructor, I train first responders. I see firsthand what natural hazards can do. So it's always important to be prepared. But preparing is not hard. It doesn't have to be complicated," Nelson said.
Nelson recommends starting with three basic steps.
"Have a plan, know how you will communicate, and have your essentials ready," Nelson said.
When it comes to preparing a home for a disaster, Nelson says backup power should be a priority.
"Backup power should be a cornerstone of every preparedness plan, but it's not a one-size-fits-all approach.
