When it comes to legal matters, the temptation to turn to artificial intelligence for answers is real. But Rick Corona, founder of Corona Law Firm, says that approach can backfire in a big way.
Corona points to a recent case involving a state senator who chose to represent himself at trial, leaning on AI instead of hiring an attorney.
"He ended up losing a case that maybe should have won and lost like a half $1 million in the judgment," Corona said.
Corona says the problem with relying on AI in a courtroom setting is that it cannot replace the instincts and quick thinking a trained attorney brings in the moment.
"A lot of times as an attorney, you have to think on your feet and respond to something. You can't go outside to check AI," Corona said.
Corona Law Firm has been practicing for about 30 years and is made up of roughly 10 attorneys, including 3 of Corona's own children.

That family-first approach extends to how the firm handles cases. Corona described a recent accident case in which his son Ricky, who handles many of the firm's accident cases, personally visited the scene of an expressway crash during rush hour to document evidence.
"He went out to the expressway; it was still rush hour, people there, but he could see the tire marks. He took pictures of them," Corona said.
That on-the-groundwork proved critical. The opposing party claimed the firm's client was at fault, but the photographic evidence of the tire marks helped tell a different story.
