The Humane Society of Broward County is looking for a forever home for Cathy, a 10-week-old kitten who was found as a stray and brought to the shelter during the height of kitten season.
Matthew Seligman of the Humane Society of Broward County described Cathy as calm, affectionate, and remarkably quiet for a kitten her age.
"She is definitely a lover. She'll sit in your lap, let you pet her. Not much of a purr, but she's very affectionate," Seligman said.
Seligman said the shelter is currently in the middle of kitten season, with an influx of kittens expected through at least the end of August.
"We're kind of in the brunt of kitten season right now. If you check our website throughout the weeks, we're kind of inundated. This is their mating season, the summer months. So we'll have a ton of kittens, at least for up through the end of August," Seligman said.
Cathy would do well in an active household. Seligman said kittens generally have a lot of energy and recommended that anyone adopting a kitten cat-proof their home, paying particular attention to cabinets and small gaps in the kitchen where a curious cat could get stuck.
Kittens can also be a great fit for families with children, though Seligman advised supervision and teaching young kids to handle animals gently.
"With children, you always want to supervise. Make sure they know not to pull on tails, don't squeeze, don't pull on the ears," Seligman said.
Because Cathy came into the shelter as a stray and not as part of a litter, she has been housed on her own to limit germ spread, a standard shelter precaution. Seligman noted that at her age, she should be easy to socialize.
"When they're this young, they're very easy to socialize," Seligman said.
