Wesley Da Silva of Speedy Piper broke down the company's tunneling and pipe installation process, explaining how homeowners can get a fully updated plumbing system fast.
Da Silva said the process begins after the tunnel excavation is complete.
"After we did the excavation part of the tunnel, we clear everything out. We leave the old pipes in place. So, we basically leave them on a shelf of dirt so people can keep using their house," Da Silva said.
New pipes are mounted on stainless steel clevis hangers attached to the concrete slab using threaded rods, keeping the pipes firmly in place throughout the process.
Once installation is complete, the old pipes are removed entirely.
"Once we're done, we rip everything out, and we take them to a yard," Da Silva said.
Getting the pitch right
One of the most critical parts of the installation is achieving the correct pitch — the angle at which the sewer line must run to connect properly to the city sewer system.
"We install every four feet one stainless steel hanger, the hanger where there's going to be holding the pipes, and from there we can control the height of the pipes on the way down to the city. So that way it's impossible for you to get the wrong pitch," Da Silva said.
Da Silva noted the only scenario that could affect the pitch after installation would be a major seismic event — something not common in Florida.
Materials built to last
The hangers are made of stainless steel to prevent rust, and the pipes are schedule 40 PVC, meeting Florida building code requirements. Da Silva said the materials are designed to last indefinitely.
"Forever. Never have to do anything again," Da Silva said.
"We're going to be piping the whole house. We're going to be coming inside the house for about 30 minutes per toilet. To remove the toilets, put a new flange connect, go back down to the tunnel, connect the system, and that's it," Da Silva said.
