Jason Mickool, founder of Greatness Lab, wants insurance and financial services professionals to stop thinking small.

Greatness Lab is a coaching company built specifically for people in insurance and financial services. The company also operates as a broker-dealer, RIA, and IMO, but Mickool said the core mission is straightforward: help people reach the highest possible level in their career and life.

"It's a coaching company for insurance and financial services people," Mickool said. "At its core, that's all we're trying to do is to help people get to the highest possible level in their career in life by helping shift their identity to being small, to being big, and actually looking to grow and exit their businesses in the future."

Mickool said one of the first things Greatness Lab works on with clients is identity — specifically, how professionals see themselves and the ceiling they unknowingly place on their own success.

"Most people, when they start a business, even not just financial services, but they see somebody that's successful and that's how they measure their success," Mickool said. "And that ultimately becomes their lid."
He said Greatness Lab pushes clients to envision something much larger for themselves.

"Do you think or look at yourself as being somebody who could have a $500 million company? Or are you thinking, you know, I'm trying to serve the next client?" Mickool said. "We really work on trying to get a vision for people that really want to go big and then give them the necessary steps and systems to be able to do it."

Leadership, collaboration, and community are also central pillars of the Greatness Lab approach. Mickool said that building a large business requires strong leadership skills, and that surrounding yourself with high-achieving peers accelerates growth in ways that going it alone simply cannot.

"In order to be able to accomplish something, we call it a quantum leap, something has to happen," Mickool said. "You either have to meet somebody who changes your perspective, or you have to learn something new."

He said the community aspect of Greatness Lab gives clients access to people who are growing faster and operating at a higher level.

"In a community where you have a seat at a bigger table, it gives you the opportunity with other people that are growing faster to play better," Mickool said. "I don't know if you play sports, but when I ski with somebody faster and better than me, I ski better."

He said that independence, while valuable, can also be isolating, and isolation limits growth.

"If you're independent, a lot of times you're alone, so you don't really get that opportunity to have a seat at the big table with people that are very accomplished and learn and grow from them," Mickool said. "And that's really what the Greatness Lab is all about."

Mickool has also authored a bestselling book, Built to Lead, Built to Scale.
