The back-to-school rush is here, and for many parents, finding quick, nutritious meals and snacks that kids will actually enjoy is one of the biggest challenges of the season.
Registered dietitian, recipe creator, and mom Anessa Chumbley has a strategy to make it easier.
"Back-to-school time can be so overwhelming. So, I've got my best tip for you. It's to keep foods on hand that are convenient, protein-rich, and can work for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. That way, when your five-year-old comes up hungry again, you're not starting from scratch," Chumbley said.
Chumbley said planning ahead pays off in more ways than one.
"I found that planning this way really helps keep my kids energized, supports their sleeping habits, which is a win, and takes some of the stress out," Chumbley said.
Breakfast
Chumbley said starting the day with a balanced meal sets the tone for healthier choices throughout the day.
"I always get a Chobani Greek yogurt drink into their little hand because then I know they're getting ten grams of protein. They're made with real fruit and farm-fresh milk, and that protein is going to help your kids feel fuller longer," Chumbley said.
"When you start the day with a balanced meal, it sets the tone for healthier choices throughout the whole day. It's like the win in the morning, and you've won the day," Chumbley said.
Lunch
When it comes to building a healthy lunchbox, Chumbley said the number one ingredient is fun.
"We like to do those bento-style lunch boxes using cookie cutters for sandwiches. Fill in with colorful fruits and veggies. But dessert is where we get hung up," Chumbley said.
For that, she turns to Chobani Flip, a creamy yogurt with crunchy mix-ins that contains 10 grams of protein per serving and is made with only natural ingredients. It is available in individual and multipack options.
The big takeaway
For parents feeling overwhelmed, Chumbley's advice is simple.
"Ditch perfection and just focus on adding one protein-rich, convenient food," Chumbley said.
Her current go-to is Chobani High Protein Greek Yogurt drinks, which come in 15, 20, and 30 gram protein options and are easy to grab on the way out the door — whether headed to school or soccer practice.
"It includes vitamin B12, those live and active cultures, all the things that, as a registered dietitian, I love. But they taste amazing," Chumbley said.
